Early Life of George Orwell

  • Born as Erik Arthur Blair, was born on 25 June 1903 in Motihari, Bengal, a British colony in what is now India.
  • George Orwell was the son of a British civil servant.  
  • He was born in India where his father was stationed. 
  • His mother brought him and his oldest sister (Marjorie) to England a year after he was born. 
  •  They settled in Henley-on-Thames, England.
  • His father stayed in India and rarely visited them.

  • George didn't really know his father until he retired from the service.


  • George was sick a lot as a child, often battling bronchitis and the flu.


  • He loved writing at an early age, composed his first poem at age four.


  • First published poem at age 11 in his local newspaper.


  • He attended a boarding school.



  • He wasn't very popular.



  • Made up for his personality in his smarts.


  • He won scholarships to Wellington college and Eton college to continue his studies.



  • After finishing Eton college, Orwell did not have money to pay for a university education. 



  • Orwell joined India Imperial police force in 1922



  • After 5 years in Burma, Orwell resigned his post and went back to England.



He had intentions to become  writer.
